City boss Enzo Maresca has the unenviable task of following Pep Guardiola, who stepped down at the end of last season after winning 20 trophies in 10 years. The new era didn’t get off to the best of starts, with the Italian presiding over a crumbling 3-0 defeat by Premier League champions Arsenal in last Sunday’s Community Shield. It puts Maresca under a little bit more pressure for this league opener against Bournemouth, who finished a record sixth last term. Midfielder Elliot Anderson should make his home debut after a £116m move from Nottingham Forest in the summer.

There is also a new face in the Bournemouth dugout, as Marco Rose takes charge of his first competitive game since replacing Andoni Iraola. The Basque boss departed the south coast as arguably the greatest manager in Cherries history after their highest Premier League finish and first-ever European qualification, so if Rose even gets close to emulating his predecessor’s flowers he’ll have done an excellent job. Bournemouth’s summer recruits include a trio of 22-year-olds, all of whom have never played in England: center-back Antonio Silva from Benfica, striker Alvaro Rodriguez from Elche and right-back Juanlu Sanchez, who joins from Sevilla.
