Let's be real… parenting is hard and admitting that it's hard doesn't mean you love your kids any less. It's hard to watch them struggle at home, at school, and in the community... it’s hard to feel like you are being judged as a parent and your child misunderstood, attending hours of appointments, and slowly feeling more isolated because of your child’s “behaviors”. It's hard because you're not sure how to help them. You know that your child wants to do well, but they struggle with meeting the world’s expectations. No-one seems to really get what it's like for them, or for you, and you feel alone in your quest to better understand.
Well, I have great news. I get you. I have felt all these things. I, too, am a parent of neurodivergent children. I am also an educator, counselor, and coach with over 25 years of experience working with autistic individuals and parents. I love joining with parents on their quest. And even more great news, you know more than you think you do. So now what?
Let's explore together, 1:1 or in a group, to learn more about their amazing brains, explore their needs (and strengths) by using the power of observation, asking without questioning, collaborating with your child to find strategies that work for them, and to promote supportive self-advocacy and independence. After all, it's not always about "behavior".
