Creating a Disability-Friendly Halloween Experience

Halloween can bring sensory overload for anyone, but especially for those who have sensory sensitivities. Do you have a child that struggles on Halloween? Here are some tips to hopefully make navigating Halloween this year a little easier:

  1. Costume- pick a costume that your child will feel comfortable in. Make sure they try it on and can tolerate the textures.
  2. Trick or Treating Practice: Practice trick or treating at your own home or the home of someone your child is comfortable with. This will give your child the opportunity to practice what’s involved and what they need to do.
  3. Find small, community-friendly Halloween events:

A. Lake Washington Symphony Orchestra Sensory Friendly Halloween Children’s Concert

Events from March 4, 2024 – March 5, 2024 – Lake Washington Symphony Orchestra (lwso.org)

B. Hands-On Children’s Museum- Olympia

Boo Bash - Hands On Children's Museum (hocm.org)

C. Chuck E Cheese Boo-Tacular (October 2-31st: Every Fun Center will open two hours early on October 29, 2023, for an additional Sensory Sensitive Sunday with reduced noise, dimmed lighting, a sensory-friendly arcade and a touch of Halloween magic for kids with autism and other needs.)
