Many people believe music has a way of opening one’s heart and soul. Some believe music can help with emotion and mood regulation, psychological stability, physical health, spirituality, cognitive maintenance/development and social benefits. For James Rock, an autistic teenager, it gave him a voice. James created a 70 minute symphony, which was then performed by USC’s music school students. “I want people to see the pain in my life and bad times, and know there’s hope,” says Jacob Rock, composer of the symphony “Unforgettable Sunrise.”
I watched a clip of his symphony and it was incredible. It brought tears to my eyes and as a mother of an autistic child who loves music, it made me so happy to see this autistic teenager’s gifts showcased and embraced. All of our children have a sparkle inside of them and it’s awesome when the key is found to unlock it. I encourage you to read more about James in this LA Times article and watch some of his symphony on YouTube.
