Intersectionality of Autism and Race

In our work with clients across Washington State, we frequently witness the disparities in access to resources and care among the black families that we serve. For families of color, the challenges of autism are often compounded by systemic racism, creating a unique set of barriers that go beyond the typical difficulties of accessing support. It is essential, both in our work with families and at the legislative level, to acknowledge these complexities to ensure that families of color receive equitable and comprehensive support.

Needed Change

Cultural Competence in Diagnoses: Education is vital for diagnosing providers to ensure accurate and unbiased care. Awareness of cultural nuances directly impacts healthcare professionals’ ability to provide quality evaluations to all patients.

Accessibility of Services: Access to quality resources and services is one of the first steps in giving autistic individuals the tools they need to thrive. According to a report by the Economic Policy Institute, an estimated 29% of Black Americans relied on Medicaid in 2023. Many providers do not accept state insurance due to the lower reimbursement rates, which leads to limited options for families looking for care. We must continue to advocate for increased access to services for families across Washington.

Education and Advocacy: Increased awareness of autism and systemic racism is a vital first step in working towards change. Amplifying marginalized voices in the community and listening to their lived experiences leads to a deeper understanding of this intersection and educates us about what changes need to be advocated for.
