Story of Hope – B & T

When families come to the Washington Autism Alliance for special education advocacy services, they are often in the midst of navigating the overwhelming and complex systems within their school district. These parents/caregivers have been working tirelessly to advocate for their child’s needs, but have reached a point where they need additional support.

This is why B., mother of seven-year-old T., sought out services from Washington Autism Alliance.

“Could you imagine the feeling that you walk alone in darkness looking for the entrance of a road? That was my feeling when I was applying my son’s IEP.”

When she came to WAA and began working with Special Education Coach Lisa, her outlook began to change. “WAA is who sent a light to me. That light is Lisa, the special education coach. She instructed me on how to read IEPs and educational files, how to find out the information behind those words, and how to match the services with the child’s needs. From meeting preparation, understanding the law, communication strategies, and the parents’ rights…she led me to knock those doors [down] one by one.”

“I know the journey ahead for my son and me remains long. But witnessing Lisa and the WAA team approach their work with such profound dedication—treating it as a true mission to help special children and families, not just a job—gave me courage and faith. Their compassion feels like the deep love they give their own children, extended generously to my son. It overwhelms me with gratitude; their unwavering support moves me to tears. With WAA’s consistent effort and more parents joining this vital mission, I believe my child will thrive, the journey will be manageable, and our community will grow stronger. I know I will join them one day soon, committed to continually improving and helping special children and their families as much as I can.”

We are so grateful to have such fierce and compassionate team members like Lisa who work hard to help families obtain the services their children are entitled to. Our organization is not only committed to supporting individual families, but to advocating for systemic changes for all families.
