Washington Autism Alliance Reaffirms Science-Backed Stance on Autism Causation and Research Priorities

KIRKLAND, WA – October 10, 2025– As discussions surrounding the causes of autism and the allocation of research resources continue, the Washington Autism Alliance (WAA) today reiterated its firm commitment to science-backed approaches. The WAA emphasizes the importance of evidence-based research and responsible communication regarding autism.

“Our community and their families are frequently exposed to headlines about treating and preventing autism or autistic traits,” stated Arzu Forough, President and CEO of WAA. “These claims are rarely supported by reliable research. We strongly advise individuals to consult with their physicians before making health-related decisions or considering supplements, drugs, or other interventions based on unsubstantiated claims.”

The WAA highlights that autism is a complex disorder existing on a wide spectrum, and assertions linking it to factors such as acetaminophen, circumcision represent a dangerous oversimplification.

The organization believes that research efforts should primarily focus on ensuring that individuals with autism and their families have access to the necessary resources and services to thrive. “We deeply value the lived experiences of those in our community and prioritize their voices in conversations about the needs of the autism community,” Arzu Forough added.

Last year, advocacy efforts led to the Autism CARES Act, which mandates research to include all individuals on the spectrum, particularly those with Profound Autism. The WAA expresses concern that promising areas of autism science are being sidelined by a preconceived conclusion that autism is caused by vaccines, and that available research funds are being diverted to efforts aimed at substantiating such inaccurate conclusions.

The Washington Autism Alliance remains dedicated to advocating for research that genuinely improves the lives of individuals with autism and their families, grounded in rigorous scientific inquiry and the authentic needs of the community.
