Dear WAA Community,
Today Washington Autism Alliance joins the United Nations to celebrate World Autism Acceptance Day, a time to recognize and spread acceptance for the rights of people on the autism spectrum. It was first designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007 and has been observed worldwide ever since.
Approximately 2% of the population in the U.S. has an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that 1 in 54 children has Autism Spectrum Disorder, up 30% from 2012 and 120% from 2002! Washington State is home to 142864 children, adolescents and adults on the spectrum. Of them 8159 are birth-5, 28,525 are under 21, and 106,180 are adults 22 and older.
