Military spouses risk multiple deployments in combat zones so that their children back home could continue to receive treatment. In a recent Congressional briefing on Caring for Military Children with Autism, Lieutenant Colonel Scott Campbell, father of 13 year old with autism, testified he is happy he was diagnosed with lung cancer because that is the only means for his son to continue to receive Autism therapy.
HR.2288, the Caring for Military Kids with Autism Act, would ensure all military families, whether they are on active duty or retired, receive insurance benefits for their children with autism. The bill was introduced last summer in the House of Representatives with bipartisan support, Representative Cathy McMorris Rogers of the 5th Congressional District (Eastern Washington) is the only co-sponsor from Washington State.
